Archives for the month of: August, 2011

Couldn’t get up on time this morning to do anything fancy. Just quickly put together a mac and cheese lunch for the boys. Let’s see if the butterfly (cut out from red pepper) flies back home! They don’t like bell peppers.

Today I am thankful for the sun…”

Last week Ah Lo saw Dai Bee with his new running shoes, he started complained he needed new shoes. Shoes he was wearing were a bit tight, he moaned. This past Saturday, I took him to try on some new shoes. He picked up a couple and chose the ones he thinks would make him run faster!

Not until I went home, I didn’t realize how much his feet had grown?!

The last pair of shoes I bought for him was size 11 and this one – size 13-1/2!!

Really?! How did that happen? Did his feet grow overnight? His new shoes didn’t seem loose. He was zooming with those new sneakers. And all along I thought he was just jealous about Dai Bee’s new shoes. Guess not. Today the truth is told.

Today I am thankful for an understanding boss…”

All over the news, we hear about the hurricane Irene storming through the east coast, causing so much damage and grief to many. I have a couple of friends in the east coast, and just thinking about how they are coping as mother nature clears her way through.

In these boxes: “Weather Lunch Boxes” – ham sandwiches, carrots and apples.

Here’s the Big Storm Lunch Box for Dai Bee.

Hoping to bring some sunshine to my friends to the east coast. Ah Lo picked the Sunshine Lunch Box because he likes the carrots (from the sun).

“Today I am thankful for my lunch date…”

This weekend we celebrated Brother’s Day. Yes, it’s a made-up holiday in our family, just to show the boys how special they are to have one another. Yes, very special indeed. In the past, they would spend some time doing some coloring together, have their favorite snack together and exchange a small gift. This year, I decided to take them to an amusement park instead. They had a blast!

I asked them what makes your brother so special?

For Dai Bee: I like it when Ah Lo

  • lets me uses his blanket to keep me warm…
  • agrees with the game I want to play…
  • lets me sleep with me at night because I get scared…
  • calms me down when I’m crying…
  • tries his best to do things like biking, swimming, or reading…

For Ah Lo: I like when Dai Bee

  • plays with me…
  • kisses me (though he hardly ever does it)…
  • reads to me…
  • do things together like swimming or draw together…
  • and I go to the same school…

Today I am thankful for the the delicious dinner…”

Inspired by Soule Mama:

A Friday ritual.

A single photo – no words – capturing a moment from the week.

A simple, special, extraordinary moment.

A moment I want to pause, savor and remember – {this moment}.

Now that we are closer to school, there shouldn’t be any excuses not to bike to school. Yes we don’t let the fog dampen our mood for getting a good workout in the morning. Today is the third day the boys biked to school. We have to get up a little bit earlier now. Have our warm breakfast and then off we go! There are a few hills the boys will have to work their muscles to get through. After that, it’s a sweet ride!

The school has parking racks to encourage more bikers. Since I don’t have a helmet yet, I would have my power walks right next to them. Finally, Ah Lo learns how to control his brakes right on time for this fun way getting to school..

Today I am thankful for the bike racks...”

To continue with the video games theme this week, I did something simple – the 80’s way. Atari – Pacman. I remembered going to my cousin’s house to “watch” them played this game. No, we didn’t own any video games when we were young because we couldn’t afford it. Maybe that was a good thing we didn’t have video games back then. We got creative and made up games where we interacted with each other!

In this box “Pacman Lunch Boxes” – PBJ sandwiches, popcorn and grapes. The ghosts are cheese with food coloring.

So we recently discovered Ah Lo is back sucking his thumb again to fall asleep (which I thought he was free of it a long time ago). We tried all sorts of way to get rid of this bad habit because it was damaging to his teeth. Nothing seemed to work. The problem was he didn’t even know he was sucking his thumb.

Two weeks ago, the boys had a dentist appointment. We brought our concern to his dentist with his thumb sucking habit. The dentist suggested this product for us to use. It’s almost like nail polish except it’ harmlesss yet effective. Basically, it’s a product that helps adults and children break the nail biting habit. You apply it on his nail (2 to 3 times a week). When he sucks on his thumb, it gives a distinct bad taste in the mouth. The thumb sucking (or nail biting) habit is supposed to stop in 10 days. The dentist suggested that we let him know in advance what we were doing. My bad. I didn’t. One night when he was asleep, I just applied one coat of Mavala Stop. In the middle of the night, he came over and said there was a weird taste in his mouth. I told him to rinse his mouth. This happened for a couple of days. Today is the 10th day, and for the last few days or so, I didn’t hear any complaints. Hopefully this product will get him to stop by putting that thumb in his mouth ever again.

I told him sucking his thumb was the reason for the bad taste in his mouth. Actually, my love, it’s this product. You’ll thank me later. Today the truth is told.

Today I am thankful for the sun...”

Ok, if you have an iPhone or Droid, you’ll know how addicting this game is. The lunches are  made up of just two angry birds in this game. There are other mad birds whose goal is to destroy all the green pigs. Maybe I’ll work on the other characters in the future. Hopefully the boys will enjoy this lunch as much as I enjoy making them! Yes, this requires a little bit more time than usual…z.z.z.z.z…..

In these box “Angry Birds Lunches” – rice, ham, BBQ pork, corn and watermelons…

The blue birds are egg white painted with food coloring pens. Got the red from mixing the rice with ketchup.

The yellow is egg yolk mixed in with rice.

Today I am thankful for lunch – leftovers from dinner…”

As soon as the boys woke up this morning, they requested that we stay home. Sure, I said, since Sundays are usually clean-up days. After their morning routines, we had lunch at home. First they complained about the lunch, then they started goofing off with Dai Bee attacking Ah Lo. Cries followed by tattle tale. Ok, my patience have officially worn off by that time.

We don’t have time outs, it’s not effective in my opinion. My way of stopping the craziness and calming our nerves is to have the boys do some worksheets on their workbooks. When Ah Lo was younger, he would write his ABCs, color, or draw something. Now, it’s 5 pages of his workbook! By the way, if they try to negotiate to do less, then I ‘up’ the pages by 10. Works like a charm! After 30 minutes or so, we’re back to having some peace and quiet in the house. The great thing about it was they learn something while being punished!

Today I am thankful for the dinner at my in-laws...”
